YOGA CLASSES
15 minutes of breathwork to reset and calm your nervous system ready for practice and overall wellbeing
45 minutes of Hatha yoga: Sometimes we focus on building up to a specific posture (asana) with plenty of options and warming up, othertimes we flow though a traditional sequence (for more explanation of Hatha yoga see FAQ)
15 minutes of guided relaxation: This is sometimes a meditation, sometimes yoga nidra, body scan or guided progressive muscle tense and release.
Mats are laid out for your convenience with straps and blocks provided. I do play music and pre heat the studio. Please let me know how you are feeling before you join the class so that I can be sensitive to your needs and make any adjustments.
The room at USSC is generally warm enough, but bring layers just in case. A water bottle is handy and there are filtered water refilling stations by reception and in the gym. All equipmemt is provided by USSC, and mats are laid out for you convenience, however, if you wish to bring your own you are very welcome, just pop your mat on top of one of the ones already laid out.
Blankets and cosy socks are optional but a nice addition to bring with you for your comfort in the relaxation phase at the end of the session.

Hatha yoga is a style of yoga that focuses on physical postures (asanas), breathing technique (pranayama), and meditation to balance body and mind. Classes are usually slower paced with an emphasis on holding poses, body alignment and connecting breath with movement. It is the foundation for most other types of yoga. Great for beginners and those looking to grow stronger and more flexible. Asanas are held anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes at a time with plenty of options for all bodies, strengths and fitness levels.
I will greet you and check in with you, explaining what we will be doing and offering options and demos as we flow through movements.
Everyone is welcome. My emphasis is on you guiding your own practice. There are a range of abilities and bodies and histories in every class. I offer you a staged approach. There is no competition or achievement involved in classes I hold. Plenty of options are offered and between asanas we return to restorative asana such as child's pose or corpse pose. I urge you to find and stay in the shapes that suit you, to explore and return to the places that feel good in your body.
If you come away learning something new then I am very happy to have helped you discover this. I invite you to get in touch with the sensations in your own body to find your edges and settle in a place of comfort within them.
I am trained to teach asana safely with plenty of warm up exercises and options - there is no perfect way to hold a pose just as there is no perfect body! You are welcome as you are.
No. Every asana has a number of variations that exist because of the infinite variations of the human body. We use props, and I offer options with the universal choice to come to childs pose or corpse pose at any point.
They help bring the ground into contact with your body. They are an essential part of yoga for all ages, bodies and abilities. I encourage use and experimentation with them as that can help you stretch and find release in the various poses in a way that is impossible in everyday life. You are also very welcome to bring your own bolsters/pillows/wedges/blocks along for the ride.
Currently I do not offer these in class unless you specifically request them from me. Your body is not to be touched by anyone other than yourself without your clear and enthusiastic consent. I will suggestively place props around you in asana to support your joints.
I hold an interim OFQUAL teaching certificate from the British Wheel of Yoga at Level 4. The BWY offer the highest level of certified yoga qualification available with the National Governing Body for Yoga in the UK, in an otherwise unregulated industry.
I have been practicing yoga since I started with Anusara and Iyengar yoga classes in the USA with Tracy Lease in 2009 and have practiced a variety of types of yoga since, continuing my practice and personal development today with my training under Cambridge Sanscrit scholar and Scariavelli instructor Tiffany Thorne, and Yin instructor Tash at The Loft in Manton.
I have lived in Rutland since 2019, I hold a CIMSPA qualified level 2 in gym instructing, and I love cats, music and books. And yoga.
